Indonesia is the world’s third biggest cocoa producing country in the world. Most of the cocoa is produced by small-scale farmers but sadly enough they have a hard time to make ends meet. This is mainly because of low productivity due to a lack of knowledge regarding pests and diseases and how to treat them. The only way to deal with this problem is by using subsidized chemical pesticide which is destructive for both farmer and nature.
Poor post-harvest techniques also lead to low quality fermented beans. Farmers have very limited access to credit to transform their cocoa production into a profitable business. The price a cocoa farmer gets for cocoa is dramatically low. The only way to support their families is by working outside their farms. As a result the farms are not maintained properly and still the farmers have difficulty to make ends meet.
With the desire to solve the many problems faced by farmers, a collaboration started between farmers, professionals and volunteers. This resulted in Organic Cocoa Project La Galigo.
We as La Galigo believe in the rewarding effects of taking care of nature. By providing knowledge and tools, we enable farmers to maximize their yields without the use of pesticides. With joined forces, we strive for organic cocoa produced in a healthy and fair environment with prosperity for farmers.
